What a game server actually costs to run, an honest breakdown

If you're paying $10 a month for a game server, you might wonder where the money goes. If you're considering self-hosting "to save money," you might be surprised how the math actually works.

This article is the honest breakdown of what it costs to run a small to medium game server, on the host side. No marketing fluff.

Sustainable game-server hosting prices around $1 to $3 per GB of RAM per month. Plans well below this either cut corners (no real DDoS protection, no backups, oversubscribed CPU) or aren't financially sustainable.

The components

Hardware

A server runs on a physical machine. That machine costs money to buy, maintain, and eventually replace.

Per-month math: a $3,000 server amortized over 4 years is $62/month for the hardware alone. That hardware serves multiple customers (most hosts split it among 10 to 100 game servers depending on configuration). Per-customer hardware cost: roughly $1 to $6/month depending on density.

Power

Server-grade hardware draws 100 to 300 watts continuously. In a data center, you also pay for cooling, which roughly doubles the power cost (rule of thumb).

At commercial electricity rates and proper cooling, power-plus-cooling is roughly $0.50 to $1.50/month per customer.

Network

Bandwidth is a real cost. A game server moves modest data per player, but at scale it adds up. Most data centers charge per-GB transit or by 95th-percentile committed bandwidth.

For game servers, typical egress (server → players) is 100 GB to 500 GB per month for a small community. Cost: $0.50 to $5/month per customer depending on the host's bandwidth arrangements.

For hosts with great peering arrangements, this cost is lower. For hosts in expensive regions or with poor peering, higher.

Rack space

Servers live in racks. Racks live in data centers. Data centers charge per rack-unit per month.

IPs

DDoS protection

Storage

Personnel

Payment processing

Stripe / PayPal / etc. charge roughly 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. On a $10 charge, that's $0.59. Real money.

Software licenses, panel costs

Profit margin

The host needs to make money. For sustainable hosting, that's typically 15 to 30 percent over costs.

Why prices vary across hosts

If everyone has roughly the same costs, why does pricing differ?

Margin differences. Some hosts run lean (low margin, high volume). Others target premium markets.

Bandwidth arrangements. Hosts with great peering pay much less for network. Smaller hosts pay more.

Overcommitment policies. "How many customers per CPU core?" Some hosts pack 100 customers on hardware that comfortably serves 30. The cost per customer is lower for the host. The customer's experience also degrades.

Service quality differences. Real DDoS protection costs real money. So do dedicated support staff. Hosts that don't invest in either can charge less.

Geographic regions. Power and bandwidth costs differ by location.

Hosts charging $3 to $4 for 4 GB RAM with "DDoS protection" are doing one of: cutting corners somewhere, sub-quality protection, hoping you'll upgrade soon, or operating unsustainably.

A consumer guide

When evaluating a host's pricing:

  • Are they specific about hardware? "Modern, current-gen cores" beats "powerful servers."
  • Are they specific about network? "10 Gbps unmetered" is information; "fast network" isn't.
  • Are they specific about DDoS protection? "Up to X Gbps absorbed" is real; "DDoS protected" isn't.
  • Are they specific about support? "Email response within 24 hours" is a commitment; "great support" is marketing.

Specific claims indicate the host knows their numbers and isn't hiding.

What a community of friends should pay

For a 4 to 8 person group on a casual server:

  • Free tier if it fits: fine.
  • Budget paid ($5 to $10): plenty.
