You have an old PC, or a homelab, or a Raspberry Pi 5 you haven't used in months. Hosting a Minecraft server on it sounds easy. Often it is. Sometimes it is the worst decision you'll make all year. This post helps you tell the difference.

What self-hosting actually costs

Most "self-hosting is free" claims forget the four hidden costs:

  1. Power. A PC running 24/7 at 80 watts costs you roughly $7 to $12 a month on US electricity. A more efficient mini-PC at 20 watts costs $2 to $3. Still a real bill.
  2. Bandwidth. Residential ISPs increasingly have data caps. A small Minecraft server is fine. A 20-player active server can move 200 GB to 500 GB a month. If your cap is 1 TB, you're using a meaningful chunk.
  3. Wear. SSDs have write-endurance budgets. Consumer NVMe drives running a save-heavy server will burn through their warranty faster than a workstation use case.
  4. Time. Your time. Every hour you spend troubleshooting a network issue at 1 AM is an hour you could have spent playing.

Self-hosting only wins on dollars when the hardware is already on for another reason and you do not value your own time.

What only paid hosting offers

  • A static, public address without DDNS workarounds or port-forwarding pain.
  • DDoS protection. Most residential ISPs do not protect you from attack traffic. Some will null-route your connection during an attack, taking your entire household offline.
  • Symmetric upload. Many home connections give 30 to 100 Mbps download but only 5 to 20 Mbps upload. Game servers care about upload. Even 5 Mbps is enough for small Minecraft, but tight for a 10-player community or for backups.
  • Predictable uptime. If your power flickers, your kid trips over the router, or your ISP has a 6 AM maintenance window, your server is down.

What only self-hosting offers

  • Direct hardware access. Want to test something with 64 GB of RAM? If you have it at home, do it.
  • No monthly fee. After the sunk cost of the hardware, the marginal cost is power and bandwidth.

The hidden trap: residential DDoS

This deserves its own warning. Game servers attract DDoS attacks. Even small ones. A bored teenager with a $5 attack subscription can take your home offline for hours. Your ISP may not help. Some will null-route you for an entire day to protect their own network.

The attack does not just take your server offline. It can take your whole house offline. Spouse on a work call, kid in class, Netflix on the TV: all stop. The Minecraft server cost you the entire household's connectivity.

If you self-host, you accept this risk. There are mitigation strategies (proxying through a cloud VM that handles the attack, using Cloudflare Spectrum, etc.) but they add cost and complexity.

  • Rent a cheap VPS ($5 to $10 a month).
  • Install the same server software you'd run at home.
  • You get a static IP, real upload bandwidth, and DDoS protection (sometimes).

This is a real and underappreciated option for people who enjoy the admin side but don't want to host on their home network.
