The browser wars, Mosaic, Netscape, IE, Firefox, Chrome

Field note. Every CSS quirk and JS engine difference came out of one fight or another in this period. Affects how panels render, how mod sites work, and why nothing is ever quite consistent.

The Web is universal. The software people use to access it is not. Through three decades, a sequence of dominant browsers has shaped how the Web actually works. Each shift was driven by technology, business strategy, and occasionally by court verdicts.

This is the story.

Era 0: Mosaic (1993-1995)

The first widely-used browser. Mosaic for Windows (1993) brought the Web to mainstream users. NCSA released it free for academic use; the company Spyglass licensed it for commercial purposes.

Mosaic wasn't really competitive. There were no real alternatives. It defined "browser" for two years.

Era 1: Netscape Navigator (1995-1997)

In late 1994, Mosaic creators Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark founded Netscape. Their browser, Netscape Navigator, was a polished commercial product that quickly displaced Mosaic.

By mid-1995, Navigator had ~80 percent market share. The company's August 1995 IPO is sometimes counted as the start of the dot-com boom: a profitless company priced at $28/share opened at $71 and closed at $58. Andreessen, on the IPO day, was 24 years old.

Navigator innovated rapidly:

  • JavaScript (introduced 1995): Brendan Eich at Netscape wrote it in 10 days. Originally to be called LiveScript; renamed for marketing reasons.
  • Cookies (1994): for basic state management.
  • SSL (1995): for encrypted connections, the foundation of HTTPS.
  • Frames, plug-ins, custom features: Netscape extended HTML aggressively.

Navigator was a commercial success. People paid for it.

Era 2: Internet Explorer (1997-2004)

Microsoft was slow to recognize the Web's importance. By 1995, Bill Gates was convinced. The "Internet Tidal Wave" memo redirected significant Microsoft resources to web technology.

Microsoft licensed Spyglass's Mosaic code and built Internet Explorer. Critically, they bundled it with Windows 95 (later Windows 98) at no extra charge.

Key moves:

  • Free. While Navigator cost money, IE was free.
  • Bundled with Windows. Most users found IE pre-installed.
  • Aggressive web features. IE 4 and 5 had advanced features Netscape struggled to match.

By 1998-1999, IE had overtaken Navigator. By 2002, IE had ~95 percent of the market. Netscape was dying.

Netscape was acquired by AOL in 1999 for $4.2 billion. Most of its developers moved to AOL or to the new open-source Mozilla project that Netscape had spun off.

The antitrust case

The U.S. Department of Justice sued Microsoft in 1998. The core allegation: Microsoft used its Windows monopoly to crush Netscape by bundling IE with Windows in anti-competitive ways.

The trial was lengthy. Microsoft's strategy was aggressive. Bill Gates' deposition was widely mocked.

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled against Microsoft in 2000, ordering the company broken up. The order was overturned on appeal. The eventual settlement (2001) was a slap on the wrist: behavioral remedies, not a break-up.

By the time the case concluded, IE had won the browser war. Netscape was gone. The legal action did nothing to revive it.

Era 3: Stagnation (2002-2005)

After winning, Microsoft mostly stopped developing IE. The team was disbanded. IE 6 (2001) became the default browser for most of the world. It went years without significant updates.

This was bad for the Web. IE 6 had bugs and security holes. It was slow to adopt new standards. Web developers spent enormous effort working around its quirks. The Web stagnated technologically because Microsoft saw no need to invest.

The phrase "IE 6 is the new IE 5" became developer shorthand for "this aging browser is holding us all back."

Era 4: Firefox (2004-2010)

In 2002, the Mozilla project released Phoenix, a lean browser built from the Netscape codebase. Renamed Firebird, then Firefox, version 1.0 shipped November 2004.

Firefox was a community open-source product. It emphasized:

  • Speed. Faster than IE 6.
  • Standards compliance. Worked with modern Web technologies.
  • Tabbed browsing. Already a thing in some browsers, but Firefox popularized it on Windows.
  • Extensions. A growing ecosystem of add-ons.
  • Privacy. Pop-up blocking, no IE security baggage.

Firefox grew rapidly. By 2008, it had ~25 percent global share. Microsoft was forced to invest in IE again. IE 7 (2006) and IE 8 (2009) shipped, finally catching up to modern Web standards.

Firefox represented a community victory: an open-source product had eaten into a monopolist's market share.

Era 5: Chrome (2008-present)

Google launched Chrome in September 2008. Most people remember it as "the fast browser." That was accurate, but the longer story is more interesting.

What Chrome did differently:

  • V8 JavaScript engine. Dramatically faster JavaScript than competitors. Made web apps feel snappier.
  • Multi-process architecture. Each tab in its own process. A single crashed tab didn't kill the browser.
  • Minimal UI. Maximum screen for content. Removed visual clutter.
  • Automatic updates. Always current. Most users were running the latest version.
  • Google services integration. Search, login, sync. Convenient and sticky.

Chrome grew rapidly. By 2012, it had passed IE and Firefox to become the dominant browser globally. By 2026, Chrome (plus its Chromium derivatives like Edge, Brave, Opera) accounts for ~70 percent of desktop and mobile combined.

The current era: Chromium dominance

In 2026, the browser landscape:

  • Chrome: ~65 percent global share. Google.
  • Safari: ~20 percent (mostly Apple devices).
  • Edge: ~5 percent (Microsoft, based on Chromium since 2020).
  • Firefox: ~3 percent (Mozilla).
  • Others: rest.

Multiple browsers run on Chromium (Google's open-source browser engine): Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera. Together they're a supermajority of the market.

This is concerning for several reasons:

  • Web standards are increasingly defined by what Chromium implements.
  • Anyone wanting to influence the Web has to go through Google.
  • Browser engine diversity has shrunk: Chromium (Blink), Safari (WebKit), Firefox (Gecko). Three engines.

Mozilla and Apple are the only real alternatives to Chromium. Without them, the Web's evolution would be entirely Google's call.

Why people picked each one

Each era's winner won for specific reasons:

Netscape: the first polished commercial browser, in a market with no real competitors.

IE: free, bundled with Windows, the path of least resistance.

Firefox: modern, fast, secure, alternative to a stagnant IE. The "thinking person's browser" briefly.

Chrome: fastest, simplest, automatic updates, Google's brand.

Each subsequent winner offered something the previous winner didn't. Chrome won by being demonstrably better at launch. Whether the next winner will displace Chrome the same way is unclear.

What browsers do now

Modern browsers are enormously more capable than 1995's:

  • Render text, images, video, 3D graphics.
  • Execute JavaScript at near-native speed.
  • Handle peer-to-peer connections (WebRTC).
  • Run web applications (Gmail, Figma, etc.) that rival desktop apps.
  • Manage credentials, passwords, payment information.
  • Provide cryptographic primitives.
  • Translate languages on the fly.

A browser in 2026 is a complete application runtime, with the Web's original document-display role being one of many things it does.

The browser as platform

The Web has become an application platform. This is both a victory and a complication:

Victory: the Web's openness means anyone can write a web app. No app-store approval, no platform tax (mostly). Cross-platform by default.

Complication: building modern web apps is hard. They've grown complex. Frameworks (React, Vue, etc.) are entire ecosystems. "Just learn HTML" has become "spend years learning the modern Web stack."

The Web is more capable than ever. It's also more complex than ever. Whether the Web's openness translates into a thriving ecosystem or into a few mega-platforms is a question of the next decade.

The privacy era

A specific recent shift: browsers now compete on privacy.

  • Safari blocks cross-site tracking by default.
  • Firefox does similarly, with various enhanced tracking protection levels.
  • Brave blocks more aggressively still.
  • Chrome has lagged, conflicted by being made by an ad company. Privacy Sandbox is Google's slow effort to address tracking concerns without breaking their ad business.

For users who care about privacy, the choice of browser matters more than it has in years.

What's next

Trends shaping the next browser era:

AI in browsers. Built-in assistants, on-page summarization, automated form-filling. Both Chrome and Edge are betting heavily here.

Privacy regulation. GDPR, CCPA, etc. continue to push browsers toward stricter defaults.

Mobile dominance. Most browsing is mobile. Browser business is now Mobile-first.

Engine consolidation concerns. Chromium's dominance is widely noted. Whether Firefox can survive long-term is debated.

Web standards drama. Ongoing tension between Apple (conservative on Web capabilities, protecting native apps) and Google (aggressive expansion of Web capabilities).

Conclusion

The browser is the most-used software on Earth. Through three decades, the dominant browser has changed four times. Each winner has shaped the Web in their image.

The Web is freer in some ways than any earlier medium: anyone can publish, anyone can build apps, no central gatekeeper. The Web is also constrained: the browsers we use are made by a handful of companies, mostly funded by advertising or platform economics.

For users, the choice of browser is real. For the Web's overall direction, the consolidation around Chromium is a concern that may or may not be reversed.

What's certain: the browser you use today is not the browser you used 10 years ago. Probably not the browser you'll use 10 years from now. The history is continuous; the specific products are not.
